We're kicking off our fall jam workshop series with a really special one! Max and Donna are part of the posse that coaches The Great Groove Band at Philly Folk Fest every year and they are masters of melody, rhythm and composition. Donna and Max bring their 'power-teaching' methods to Ottsville on Saturday Sept. 27. Donna says, "People can learn tunes anywhere. Max and I want to help people learn to play them with style, life, and expression." Donna teaches rhythm first as the basics of any tune, so be prepared to learn chords right along with melodies. Bring your audio recording devices.
Times: 1pm-2:15, 2:30-3:45. Each one teaches two 75 minute sessions with a fifteen minute break in the middle, ending with a 30 minute jam until 4:30. I. Max Cohen offers guitar players a guided tour of DADGAD tuning, learning major and minor progressions commonly used in accompanying Celtic fiddle music. Intermediate and up. 75 minutes |
II. Donna Hébert teaches how to rhythm-ize a fiddle tune. Learn how to find the implied rhythms in tunes and dress up the core melodies with new rhythms on every repetition. That's what fiddling is all about! This is a bowing seminar for fiddlers, but other instruments are welcome and can benefit - phrasing is phrasing, no matter the instrument. Intermediate and up. 75 minutes
Break - 15 minutes III. Max Cohen teaches rhythm skills. All instruments - Max will focus on finding the pocket and keeping it going. Hands-on endurance exercises and hand-saving secrets in jig time (6/8), reels (2/4) and waltzes (3/4) - Intermediate and up - 75 minutes IV. Donna Hébert teaches you to rock the house on a jig, and she knows how! It's all in where you PUT the ACcent, DON'T ya KNOW? Find the four beat in jigs and learn to hiccup in six. This class is guaranteed to teach you more about playing jigs with life and lightness than anything you've seen, covering dynamics, bowing patterns, note lengths, differences in Scots and Irish ornamentation, and syncopation, just for a start. Intermediate and up. 75 minutes. V. Jam Session - 30 minutes all together - rocking on jigs, building rhythm confidence. |
